Mission Statement

As school counselors, our mission is to provide a comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program as an integral part of Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary which assists all students in developing skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to become lifelong learners, productive workers and responsible citizens.

Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary’s Guidance Program

We believe an effective guidance program must be a fundamental and integral part of the overall educational process. Our developmental program promotes student success through a focus on academic, career, and personal/social development.

Our guidance and counseling program is student-centered with a proactive and preventive focus that enhances the learning process by assisting students in acquiring critical skills for lifelong learning and success.

Our counselors work with students, including those with academic and social development problems and those with special needs. They advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of children. They help students evaluate their abilities, interests, talents, and personality characteristics in order to develop realistic academic and career goals.

Our counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs and conflict resolution classes. They also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student’s development. Counselors interact with students individually, in small groups, or with entire classes. They consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, medical professionals, and social workers in order to develop and implement strategies to help students be successful in the education system.

Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Department:

The exceptional student Education Department at Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary consists of highly qualified and certified Varying Exceptionality teachers and Inclusion facilitators, a Speech Language Pathologist, and a School Psychologist serving children on both campuses. This department ensures the appropriate education of all students by establishing high expectations, removing barriers for students and teachers, modeling effective practices, and sharing information. They work together to assist teachers in helping students who are struggling in the regular education classroom.

They, along with the guidance department, and classroom teachers, make up the Intervention Assistance Team. This team works to provide interventions that may help students progress and meet academic goals in the regular education classroom. They monitor the progress of these students and will evaluate the student's needs if adequate progress is not made. If the student meets criteria for services in a special education program, the team meets to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Most students with an IEP are served in the regular classroom setting with support from an ESE teacher. However, a continuum of services is available to ensure the students success. The IAT team may also recommend the student be screened or evaluated by the school's Speech and Language Pathologist.

At Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary the speech/language pathologist has a Master's of Science degree in Communicative Disorders and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association. She works to aid in prevention of communication disorders, identify students at risk for later problems, assess student's communication abilities, evaluate the results of the comprehensive assessments, and develop and implement the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Students who have problems with articulation, language, fluency, and voice are seen by the SLP. She is also trained to provide hearing screenings when needed. This department is committed to the success of all students at Lewis Anna Woodbury Elementary.
